Would You Ever Recommend the Competition?

Because our calendar fills so quickly we are sometimes in need of recommending other entertainers to help our clients out, we have a circle of other entertainers who we trust will do an amazing job for the clients we are unable to perform for

No business can ever be all things to all customers.  What should you do, then, if your business can’t provide precisely what a customer needs?  Should you try to sell him or her your best alternative, even if it doesn’t really fit the bill, should you just send them away empty-handed – or should you recommend a competitor company that you know can satisfy their need?

Many business owners would rather close up shop than send business to competitor companies, but actually they could be doing themselves a huge disservice.  Recommending the competition not only displays the ultimate in customer service, but also the ultimate in confidence in their own products or services.  When you tell prospective customers that you can’t service particular requirements and that they would be better off going elsewhere, you are not saying that you don’t ever want them to come back to you again.  Instead, you are showing respect for the fact that they understand their own needs and saving them what could be considerable amounts of time and effort in finding an alternative supplier, all of which makes it more likely, not less, that they will come back to you in the future.

Everyone appreciates great customer service, and those rare businesses that are prepared to forgo a sale for the sake of achieving good customer relations stand out as companies that people want to deal with in the future.  Put your customers first and the rest will follow!
